Today, 17 September, is World Patient Safety Day, an initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which has been celebrated since 2019.
This year's theme focuses on improving diagnosis for patient safety, with the aim of: raising global awareness of patient safety issues at the time of diagnosis; emphasising diagnostic safety in patient safety policies and clinical practice at all levels of healthcare; promoting collaboration between the different interested parties to implement correct, timely and safe diagnosis; and empowering patients and families to actively engage with health professionals and carers to improve diagnostic processes.
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the interested parties that plays an important role in achieving these goals, promoting the research and development of tools and technologies for diagnostic excellence, supporting healthcare professionals and patients on the effective use of diagnostics and medical devices to maximise their impact, and collaborating with and gathering feedback from users to understand their needs and challenges, ensuring that the proposed solutions are practical and effective.
World Patient Safety Day highlights the critical importance of safety measures in healthcare, urging global solidarity and joint action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety.
